I smoked heavily for 13 years, 30-50 rolled cigarettes a day. I never intended to quit, despite beginning to feel health consequences and witnessing my father suffer and die from lung cancer due to his smoking and the devastating effect this had on my family.
In December 2011 I discovered vastly less harmful flavoured nicotine vaping products (e-cigarettes) which I found more enjoyable. I instantly switched to vape, was applauded by my general practitioner, have been smoke free since and have benefited from numerous health improvements. A wide selection of legally available products, nicotine strengths and flavours have been vital to maintaining my interest and in preventing me from returning to smoking or accessing illicit market sources.
Nicotine vaping has received support from the world’s most prestigious institutions and experts, especially in the United Kingdom. Global populations must urgently be made aware of the minimal relative risk of Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) products like vaping. It should be considered a human right for all people globally to have access to the full range of these lifesaving reduced risk alternatives.
Opponents of these innovations should be corrected and reprimanded when disseminating fraudulent exaggerations, unscientific misinformation and panic inducing falsehoods. Irresponsible restrictions of THR products have done nothing but threaten those most at risk of health complications, fuel illegal markets and maintain deadly combustible tobacco smoking – the biggest cause of preventable disease and death.
